Residency Trends of Foreign Residents

Where do most foreign residents live? This page introduces their distribution of residency by municipality.
Total number: 2015-2021
Many foreign residents have stayed in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the area from Shizuoka to Mie across Aich prefecture and Osaka as well. Especially around Tokyo, Aichi, and Mie have large populations of foreign residents. The Hokuriku and Chugoku regions are dotted with cities with many foreign residents. In contrast, the number of foreign residents in Tohoku, Hokkaido, Shikoku, and Kyushu is small.
China: 2015-2021
Residents were concentrated in metropolitan areas, including the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Chukyo metropolitan area. On the other hand, there were cities with a large number of residents in the Hokuriku region, including Kanazawa City, and the Setouchi region, including Okayama City.
South Korea: 2015-2021
Most foreign residents stay in the metropolitan areas, Aichi, and Osaka. A larger concentration of Koreans are staying in the Osaka area (Osaka, Hyogo, Shiga) than in the Tokyo area. Cities on the Seto Inland Sea and in the Hokuriku regions have large numbers of Korean residents.
Taiwan: 2015-2021
Residents are concentrated in the capital area. Although many Taiwanese live in areas around Osaka and Aichi, many are also concentrated around Tokyo. A few areas in western Japan house many Taiwanese people.
USA: 2015-2021
Many live in Tokyo, Osaka, and Okinawa. Every region is dotted with cities where many Americans live.
Indonesia: 2019-2021
Many live in various parts of Japan south of the Kanto region, with a particular concentration in Kanto, Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Hokuriku, the Seto Inland Sea, and Kagoshima. In Tohoku, many foreign residents live in Sendai.
Thailand: 2019-2021
Many foreign residents stay in the Kanto region in particular, and many also live in a semicircular area from Chiba to Tokyo. Furthermore, many live in Mie, northern Nagano, near Nagoya, and Hiroshima.
Nepal: 2015-2021
Many Nepalese have gathered in Kanagawa, Tokyo, Gunma, and western Aichi prefectures; other cities housing many Nepalese are Shizuoka, Mie, Okayama, Kagawa, Oita, and Fukushima.
Philippines: 2015-2021
Many foreign residents live in Tokyo, Gunma, Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Toyama, and Hiroshima. Most live in the Chubu region; in the Chubu region, many live in medium-sized cities and suburbs.
Brazil: 2015-2021
Most live in the northern Kanto region, from Shizuoka to Mie and Shiga, and Nagano Prefecture. Few are concentrated in other areas.
Vietnam: 2015-2021
Many live in areas around Tokyo, northern Kanto, western Shizuoka Prefecture, Mie, Hokuriku, the Seto Inland Sea region, and northern Kyushu, for instance, Nagasaki. From 2015 to 2021, the number of cities with a large Vietnamese population increased.
