Immigration Trends of Foreign Residents
Medical Services
“Medical Services” is a residence status required for medical workers with foreign nationality qualifications, such as doctors, dentists, and nurses, to engage in medical work in Japan. The period of stay can be 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, or 3 months.
Many with medical qualifications come from Asia, especially from China and South Korea, with the number increasing except in 2020. Medical tourism may also be involved. Numbers from Malaysia, Vietnam, the United States, and the United Kingdom are declining, while those from Indonesia and the Philippines are increasing slightly. Even North America, with the highest number outside Asia, sends only about 20 medical professionals annually, and most other regions send none.
