Immigration Trends of Foreign Residents
Nursing Care
“Nursing Care” is a work qualification for certified care workers based on a contract with the worker’s organization to provide care or care guidance. The period can be 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, or 3 months.
This residence status was newly established in 2017 due to the shortage of nursing care workers in Japan, and at that time, care workers mainly from China and Turkey entered and left Japan.
In 2019, a few from Turkey entered Japan, but the number entering from Southeast Asian countries, for instance, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia, increased. This trend seems related to Turkey and Iran being excluded from the list of Specified Skilled Workers due to concerns about increasing illegal immigration.
