Dependent

The residence status “Dependent” is granted to a spouse or child supported by a person with a designated residence status. The period can be 5 years, as specified by the Minister of Justice.
Large numbers of people with dependent status enter and leave Japan, especially from nearby Asian countries and Australia, as well as from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Germany.
From around 2011 to 2015, the numbers arriving from Europe and Canada were characterized by a sharp decline; in many other countries, the number is also declining. The numbers entering Japan from rapidly growing countries, mainly in Asia, are rising, but since 2011, developed countries have experienced a temporary decline.
